Mercedes Benz 280E, Start failure

I own a Mercedes Benz 280E 1972, it doesn’t currently start and I’ve been told countless times that it’s the started motor. The only issue is I can hear the starter motor going off it’s just the engine doesn’t run, I think it’s an issue with the fuel.

I’ve replaced the leads, spark plugs and fuel pump and have ruled it down to either

the starter motor
the fuel and air filters
the fuel injectors
or the timing chain

Was there anything that could be added or ruled out as I’ve got close to no clue what I’m doing. I have the owners workshop manual for the Mercedes Benz and have just been working off that and doing basic diagnostics.
