Hi folks. I have three vehicles, which all exhibit different behaviors after changing the engine oil:

  1. Silverado Duramax: Immediately after changing the oil, I get a good reading on my dispstick. No issues here.
  2. Tundra: Immediately after changing the oil, I get no reading on the dipstick. It shows that there is no oil. However, I start the car and I see a normal reading on the oil pressure gauge on the dashboard. After driving the car for a bit, I finally get a reading on the dipstick.
  3. Hyundai Palisade: Immediately after changing the oil, I get no reading on the dipstick. I don’t have an oil pressure gauge in this car. But after driving it for a while, I get a good reading on the dipstick.

My questions are:

  1. Is it safe to start the car without a positive reading on the dipstick? If not, what are the risks?
  2. Why would some of our cars not show a positive reading after initially adding oil, but show a positive reading after driving it for a while?
