Hello,
I recently built a custom PC for a friend and it is having issues utilizing the GPU to its full potential. I’ve built around 10 PCs in my life so I like to think I know what I’m doing. I’m going to list all the steps I’ve taken and what the issue seems to be so maybe one of you can help diagnose the problem.
Here is a link to the build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2DNDJy
Built the PC, booted and everything worked fine, installed windows, installed MOBO drivers, started installing benchmark software, and finally went to install the latest NVIDIA drivers (546.17). About halfway through the installation of the drivers, the PC went completely black and got itself stuck in a reboot cycle over and over again. Every couple of reboots it would load into windows but be incredibly laggy with some artifacting on the screen, and within 15 seconds it would bluescreen with “Video Scheduler Internal Error”. this happened multiple times over about a 15 minute period.
Finally we got the “windows did not boot properly” screen and tried a fresh install of windows. This didn’t solve the problem as it got itself in the same reboot loop and crashes/bluescreen.
The next step I took was to enabled integrated graphics and run the video from the motherboard. Doing this I was able to boot into windows with no more crashes or lag and actually use the computer. I then used DDU to wipe the nvidia drivers and was able to install some older ones. Then I booted back into bios, disabled integrated graphics, and rebooted with the HDMI cable plugged into the GPU.
I was able to get back into windows successfully after the driver wipe with no lag or crashes and everything seemed to be working normally. It wasn’t until we did a benchmark test that we discovered the real issue here. The 4070ti was getting 30fps in heaven benchmark and 5-10fps in the harry potter game. I also noticed in MSI afterburner and GPU-Z that there wasn’t any reported clock speed from the GPU and the only sensors that were working were GPU temp and memory clock. Also noticed that the GPU fans weren’t turning on during boot or load.
Fast forward to today and I put in a replacement 4070ti and the problem still persists, I also noticed that under load (heaven benchmark) the RGB in the case and fans seem to turn on and off for no apparent reason.
I’m of the opinion that this has to be a motherboard or a power supply issue and maybe something got fried during the Nvidia driver update, but I’d like to hear what you guys think. Thanks
