It’s been quite some time i dealt with hardware. I’d like to think i’ve chosen a “close to future proof” parts for my needs, however, i’m pretty sure i might made some mistakes. For that I’m humbly requesting your expert feedback to find the flows in this build 🙏🏼

Config: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6L884M

As silent as possible, compact but good airflow(hence less power hungry, right?). Im open to change anything. But hear me out:

  • NAS for media (movies + music + photo album)
  • i do code, quite a lot and want to make use of virtualization hence probably dockers for pet projects (nothing crazy)
  • no media editing whatsoever, just maybe occasional pic and video trims from family trips and prepare photo albums
  • went with intel to avoid purchasing a GPU for hw transcoding, also for virtualisation
  • added one M2 for OS and other apps
  • maybe in future i can add a SSD or use the m2_2 not sure yet. (30 TB available space from Raid 5 should last me quite long tbh)
  • empty PCIe slots for possible expansion or network card maybe.
  • i’ll most likely make use of on board wifi 6
  • it’ll probably run 5 days a week on average so i tried to consider low power consumption but i’m not sure if i’ve done a good job.
  • OS i want to go for is True NAS Core with RAID5 using 4x10TB (mixed toshiba and WD to increase fault tolerance)
  • wish this case had hot swap cage tho :(

Thank you very much in adv🙏🏼

thank you for your comment and the details you provided. so thats where the virtualization comes into picture right? I’m not planning to give drive access to all the pods running in this server. I have an SSD lying around for temp storage. Say, i’d hoard some stuff then either i’ll manually move them to RAID area or probably do some batch jobs to do that. I also use ProtonVPN so that should be one layer of protection. I’m not sure if i’ll set up a firewall too but i guess we’ll see down the line. I’m guessing i’ll need to add additional network card for that. I didn’t get what you meant by high spec games but basically %90 of the storage will be internal LAN only. whats the best practice on these?
