Dear Coach McDermott,
First and foremost I would like to thank you for getting the Bills into football relevance. For this, I am appreciative. Pulling this team from mediocrity into perennial playoff contenders seems to be nothing short of a miracle. You giving the opportunity for Kyle Williams to punch in a TD against the 'Phins during that '17 season will be etched into my memory until I am a feeble old man. Seeing consecutive playoff berths of this team is something I am undoubtedly grateful for. Believing in, and giving Josh Allen the leeway to develop into what he is now, has changed the course of this franchise.
However, it is with a heavy heart I must say that your tenure with the team needs to end. Sean (if I may be so bold), your mindset just isn’t going to get this team, this talent where it deserves to go. The big one. The point of all these games. The Super Bowl.
The point isn’t the playoffs. The point isn’t to be the top of the division. The point is to win the damn trophy. Your mindset it seems to me, and many other fans, is too try not to lose. And with that type of mentality, you’ve now lost SIX overtime games.
You have been beat now in multiple big time games…
13 Seconds. The Hail Murray. Jefferson’s Miracle Catch.
Odd how Buffalo is always on the losing end of these huge games. Why Buffalo never seems to come out the victor. Why Buffalo always has the heartbreak.
Frazier is gone, Slater is gone and now Dorsey is gone (that one seems to be in the team’s best interests). Slowly, slowly, Sean, you’re running out of people in the room to put the blame on.
Maybe, rather than trying to not lose, you go for the win. Maybe don’t play prevent defense when the game is on the line. Maybe, let your star QB go for a big play when there’s still time left on the clock.
At the end of the day, the leader, the one calling the shots, the one putting together the gameplan needs to be responsible for the results on the field. Especially if the talent is there. And let me tell you, this team has plenty of talent.
Josh Allen. Stef Diggs. James Cook. Dalton Kincad. Ed Oliver. Von Miller. Matt Milano. Greg Rousseau. Aggressive players. Hungry players. Players who want their pound of flesh. Unfortunately Sean, I think you’re okay with settling for salad.
Coach McDermott, you’ve done wonders for this franchise and as a fan from the Golden years, through the drought, I thank you again for getting this team here. However, if this version of the Buffalo Bills is going to hoist a Lombardi, you can’t be the one helming it. You play to not lose. You don’t play to win. And in this league, for that prize, fortis fortuna adiuvat.
Good luck with your future endeavors Coach. I just hope it’s not here.
Sincerely, F.F.
Yeah I went back and watched it. You have your top 3 dbs there, with Hyde and white there and poyer comes in late. Like you said they tried to catch it instead of knocking it down.
