  • I’ve got a 2006 Toyota Camry with a 2.4 automatic and about 160k miles on it. In the past week, the engine started thumping very sporadically when I’m at idle. It’s not consistent- sometimes, I’ll idle for 10 minutes without issues, and other times, it does it every minute or two (sometimes as often as 10 seconds apart, but not consistently). It will also very occasionally do it when accelerating from a stop, but that’s only happened a few times. When it does that, the tach will drop a bit, spike, drop back down, and then run as usual (here’s a couple of graphs showing that). Torque also shows two tests that consistently fail (TID: $02 CID: $04 and TID: $02 CID: $06, both lean to rich sensor threshold voltage (constant).

For what it’s worth, I’ve also had a code 0442 and 0456 since early this year, which I haven’t dealt with (beyond replacing the gas cap, which didn’t solve the problem). There’s no other codes beyond those.

I went ahead and replaced the spark plugs, since I don’t know when they were last changed, so I figured that they’d be about due- the old ones were definitely past their prime, but that didn’t solve the issue.

Any ideas what the most likely culprit (or culprits) might be?
