As a Pistons fan, I wasn’t super excited about them hiring Monty in the first place. Huge salary, guy said he wanted a break from coaching, etc. But I gave them the benefit of the doubt since they are a young team and sometimes questionable coaching hires pay off. But after this 10 game losing streak I felt like I had to make it known that Monty Williams has basically been hard carried by Chris Paul. I’d had this hunch for a while but never looked at the numbers until now:

2010/2011 - New Orleans - 46 Wins 36 Loses - Chris Paul 2011/2012 - New Orleans - 21 Wins 45 Loses - No Chris Paul 2012/2013 - New Orleans - 27 Wins 55 Loses - No Chris Paul 2013/2014 - New Orleans - 34 Wins 48 Loses - No Chris Paul 2014/2015 - New Orleans - 45 Wins 37 Loses - No Chris Paul 2019/2020 - Phoenix - 34 Wins 39 Loses - No Chris Paul 2020/2021 - Phoenix - 51 Wins 21 Loses - Chris Paul 2021/2022 - Phoenix - 64 Wins 18 Loses - Chris Paul 2022/2023 - Phoenix - 45 Wins 37 Loses - Chris Paul 2023/2024 - Detroit - 2 Wins 11 Loses - No Chris Paul

So that’s 716 games coached total with 398 w/o CP3 and 318 w/CP3. In the 398 w/o CP3, Monty’s record is 163 Wins 235 Loses for a 41% win percentage. In the 318 with CP3, Monty’s record is 206 wins 112 Loses for a 65% win percentage.

Obviously simple looks at wins and losses don’t tell the whole story but his record without Chris Paul shows a coach that did not deserve that massive salary. Especially with how this season for the Pistons has started.

Why do people always mention the money Monty is getting paid? Who cares. Not like it counts against the team’s cap sheet.

They need Duren, Bogey and Morris to come back asap.
