2006 sienna. 150k miles. Check engine light came in yesterday. I took it to the dealer to find out that the catalytic converter needs to be replaced.
I can’t sell it like this and they were telling me 2.8k to replace it. The car still runs

-A dealer charges because they want you to buy a new car
That’s completely wrong. I work at Toyota in Parts, and let me tell you, we hate sales department. A bunch of ego maniacs who suck. Why would we help boost their sales? Fuck that, keep bringing in that ‘96 4runner it benefits both Service dept and parts. I get commission off parts sales, so if the service writer can sell a catalytic converter, I make money too.
I get it labor rates are high. But hope and pray your “independent mechanic” uses quality OEM parts, and not some cheap Fastundercar, autozone and O’Reilly parts. Because some independent mechanics once told me “I put cheap parts so my customers keep coming back”.
I only have like 2 independent shops who buys strictly OEM because they’re legit shops, but also aren’t cheap. Bear in mind I wholesale to 3 major cities, hundreds of “independent mechanics” that stray from using OEM. I mean Im not saying they are all bad, because they’re is good aftermarket stuff out there and depending what shop they have quality aftermarket parts they like to use. Like my buddy runs a shop and only uses quality brands like Advics brakes, Denso parts, and a few others from a wholesale parts company called, Worldpac. Just food for thought.
