I saw a comment here or on Twitter that mentioned the fact that Riot doesn’t recognize Gen.G as SSG or SSW in official tournaments (ie: LCK,MSI,Worlds).
I’m also a frequent viewer of the LCK and noticed that during this years group stage the team’s “Banners” hanging from LoL park which showed the teams past achivements and Gen.G’s banner has SSG’s and SSW’s records seemingly absent from it. Which probably means that the LCK also doesnt recognize Gen.G as Samsung Galaxy
Whilst I searched for an answer for my odd question the community agreement seems to lean towards Gen.G being SSG. Completely opposite of Riot’s view on Gen.G
Now I’m even more confused to which is real. Is Gen.G a “rebrand” (like SKT T1 to T1) or the fact that they were bought out by KSV makes them a relatively new org with a separate history (like TSM to Shoppify Rebellion or Sunning to Weibo)
Let me know what your thoughts are on this random question.
I think one of the comments here pretty much summarizes what I think of this. "You can claim to be your father’s successor, but it’s pretty weird for you to claim being your father yourself and claiming all of his achievements and history.
Although now it’s even more confusing since the LCK DOES recognize Gen.G as Samsung Galaxy (and even Blue) but (Allegedly) Riot themselves doesn’t but i guess it could be boiled down to ceremonial legacy and office/business matter.
TLDR: Gen.G isn’t Samsung Galaxy but their successor.
Samsung doesn’t sponsor that team anymore.
