I’m not saying that it should win (though I won’t complain if it does), but for me it’s one of the freshest ideas I’ve seen in gaming in a long time, and it would be a real shame if it gets overlooked because it’s a mod instead of a full game (or because people were too distracted by the all the other great releases this year that they never played it).

For those who don’t know, MyHouse.wad is a Doom mod that, while reusing a lot of Doom’s assets, essentially turns it into a completely new game. My first encounter with it was this video, which contains such a detailed showcase that it almost substitutes actually playing it (while, obviously, spoiling the whole thing, so don’t watch it if it’s something that you might want to play).

There have been a lot of good games released this year, so if people don’t think it quite measures up to this year’s best, then so be it, but it would be a real shame if it misses out due to a technicality, or because reviewers neglected to play it.

On the off chance that anyone from a major publication sees this, please play MyHouse.wad, if you haven’t already, and please consider it for your end of year list. I’m all for a broad definition of video games that includes things like mods, because otherwise where are they going to be mentioned?

To the people who’ve played it, do you think it’s one of the games of the year? Where would it be on your personal list? And am I right in thinking that it should be considered, or would publications be right to exclude it for being a mod? Curious to hear people’s thoughts.
