Continuation: Foul is on a shot attempt. 2 free throws (or 3 if on a 3 attempt). Continuation is a phrase usually used when someone makes the shot (and-1), they count the basket and get 1 free throw.

Foul on the floor: Foul occurred before a shot attempt. Will not be awarded free throws unless the fouled Team is in the bonus. Also, if the shot is made it will not count because the ref thinks the foul occurred before the shot attempt.

People argue over this all the time. When a player is fouled they will try to attempt a shot and the ref will sometimes call it a shooting foul or an and-1 (continuation) and other times they will say its on the floor. It’s up to the ref to decide if the player really was attempting a shot or not.

Some players try to game this to get more free throws but it doesn’t always work.
