Is this a bug or are we now forced to use airplane mode just to get on wifi? Turning mobile data off still has phone connected to mobile data network.

My mobile data is Verizon Unlimited 5G, so I only get about 30mb down and 6mb up speed if I’m lucky and calls are always cutting in and out at my house. (south of NYC)

My wifi is 800-1200mb down and 400-600mb up. The only way I get decent internet or phone calls on my phone is with wifi.

My family of 3 all has G22

Yes, I think so, I worked for a major phone company a few years ago doing product design. The bars are an indicator that users are connected to a tower. If users do a speed test and it’s the speed of the tower (in my case 30mb/sec), the data is transferred from there - uses mobile data. If users get wifi speed (in my case 1000mb/sec) the device is on wifi weather or not its getting signal from a tower.

I think this is more about getting users to use mobile data while on wifi.

The issue I have is that its slowing down my speed because the tower signals here are really bad. My phone is also starting to get warm while inactive from constantly switching between signals. I can find workarounds for the signal switching like limit the towers to under 3G and under (that way it stays connected to just a few), but then it’s always slow even if I’m outside my neighborhood.

I could see others having an issue who are on non unlimited plans since it’s draining their plans while they believe they are on wifi.
