Over the past few weeks I’ve seen countless topics regarding everything that’s wrong with this team. Some of you believe more patience is needed, others (most) believe changes have to be made. Some blame is thrown on Monty, and some more on Weaver and ownership.
Guess what, you’re all right. This team feels rudderless, which is always a shame when it comes to franchises with a lot of tradition. I have so much respect for this franchise and its history. Yet, the roster has been put together without any vision in mind. It’s impossible to win in today’s NBA without lots of efficient shooters and a floor general who can get his own 3pt shot whenever he wants. I’m sorry to say this buy at this point you could substitute Cade for Ben Simmons and you’d probably have the same number of wins.
I’m not arguing that you should, because there’s plenty of time for Cade to improve his shooting, but if I could take this team over tomorrow, nobody would be off limits in a trade, except for Ausar.
Solutions? Accept this is happening. You have to tank now for a chance at the no. 1 pick. Meanwhile, hope management can stumble into a vision for the roster. It needs shooting and high-confidence players. It’s simple really - all five starters have to be a threat from beyond the arc. I remember arguing in favor of a Myles Turner trade 1-2 years ago when he was highly available and the Pacers were spiraling. A center who can shoot and defend like he does would have been an excellent piece to add.
Anyway, in order to find sustainable success, either ownership or management has to change. There’s only so much a coach can do. In fact, I’d argue that with a roster like this, you could bring in the entire council of Greggs (Popovichs) Rick & Morty style, and it still wouldn’t matter. This team has less firepower than the freaking Wizards.
Another sad fact is that there is not one single player on this roster that would start for a playoff team, neither in the East or the West. So there’s really no building on what you already have. You can be patient, but that patience won’t be rewarded with success, but rather an gradual improvement of players such as Cade and Ausar that still won’t result in sustainable winning without a strong supporting cast.
Personally, I’d go into 24/25 with Cade, Ausar, Sasser and Duren, and whoever gets drafted next summer, while using the rest of the roster + draft capital to trade for high-character guys that are efficient at creating their own shots, and are not going through any types of growing pains. Also, you can’t have too many big wings that can shoot and play D, so look at the Anunoby types, Siakam, those guys. Siakam would be gettable if you dangle a couple of first rounders - that’s been the price for the past few years now.
I’ve said my peace. The team as currently constructed is in no man’s land. It’s not winning anything, and it’s not on pace to win anything either. The sooner you blow it up, the better.
Tank? They’re on pace to be the worst team of all time…
