I’m in Canada, Edmonton specifically, and I’d really like to get an EV as my next car. But I live in an apartment style condo with uncovered outdoor parking that only has a 120v 15a outlet for your car. It IS on a breaker in my unit but I’m sure I can’t reuse the wiring in the ground for a larger wattage so I don’t think I can change it without paying a huge sum of money to retrench, and that’s if I could even get the condo assoc. to agree to let me do it.
So is it at ALL feasible for me to drive an EV while only using standard 120v to charge? I’m specifically interested in a Hyundai Ioniq 5/6. I do work from home 90% of the time, only going into the office once or twice a month. No chargers at work unfortunately or I could just choose to go there more often to charge (if employers want people back here’s a step in the right direction).
Thoughts? Has anyone done this in Canada winters?
Yes, but depends on the temperature.
Our car gains no range below freezing on 12 amps at 110V. But a friend is fine in Nor Cal with 110V only for normal use, he does use fast charging for trips. His commute is similar to yours. Consider if you can charge at work.
