A question about VPN while at work

I have a simple question (I think) about VPN:

If I connect my phone to my work WiFi and I activate hotspot and VPN on it and then I connect to my phone hotspot with my work’s laptop, is my connection private and sicure or I need to activate a VPN the laptop as well?
