For horror gamers, Alan Wake 2 is a masterpiece. It is an experience movies or books haven’t gave me in a long time.
No spoilers
This game is like a mixture of Resident Evil, The X Files, and True Detective season 1 (which was also a masterpiece)
The sounds alone are incredible. It may be the best looking game I’ve ever played. Pushes the boundaries of what’s possible that I haven’t seen besides Cyberpunk.
If you’re a huge horror guy like me, you hit a point in your life where a lot of horror loses its edge. You’ve read Stephen King. You’ve seen all the classics. John Carpenter’s The Thing is like comfort food. You have the Halloween theme song stuck in your head every Halloween when the kids go trick r treating…but you can’t quite capture that feeling of being a little kid scared out of your mind like you once had.
I moved over into the gaming space and it has really helped. This game feels like you’re a character in a movie or show that you can’t put down. Scary is subjective, but to someone like me, it’s all atmosphere. The way it makes you feel. The way it ignites those once forgotten feelings of being scared to look under your bed as a child. The Music. The scenery. The dread. The mysterious nature of a Twin Peaks or Lynch film where something feels off and you can’t quite put your finger on it…
This game is that feeling.
It’s absolutely incredible. 10/10, would recommend to non gamers and and non horror fans alike because it’s a great experience.
Some games may be “scarier” or have more jump scares, etc. but this game just gives me that feeling I’ve missed for so long.
I know this is the horror sub, but if you’re like me and have watched The Thing, Alien, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1,000 times, loved Hereditary and It Follows, love horror novels, the shows I mentioned above, I think you would really enjoy Alan Wake 2. You don’t have to play the first to enjoy it either. You will pick up the story and learn as you go.
Just wanted to throw this out there as an idea or treat for Halloween!
I also could not finish the first one. It hasn’t aged well despite a cool story. I will say though it’s completely different than the first game and I wouldn’t let that detour you if you’re a fan of the genre.
