I made this exact mistake when the Switch OLED came out. I got caught up in hype, I bought the new one, and slowly it dawned on me that I just spent 300 extra dollars for exactly the same machine I already had, and a screen that, as good as it was, was NOT worth that 300 dollars.
If you don’t own a Steam deck, then go nuts! Do what you want.
If you already own a Steam Deck, you already own everything you actually wanted a Steam deck for. An OLED screen is not going to make the games you already play somehow magically better. You’re fine. Chill out
I agree with the OP. I bought a switch oled and even paid for the hori split pad pros and binbok joycons which in my opinion looks better than my steam deck screen. However, I found myself not even using either the two devices as I enjoy league of legends wild rift which I play on my Samsung galaxy. If you already own a steam deck of any variant, it is best to wait 2 or 3 years to get a new revamped steam deck 2 with better battery efficiency and 0 bezels with 8k amoled screens and also faster performance for even more defined games. Overall, if you don’t own the original steam deck or have no switch handheld or any other handheld for that matter. I would say dish out the money and get a 512gb oled steam deck.
Otherwise, save the money and maybe get a nintendo switch pro 2 whenever it comes out for cheaper.
