So I bought this Subaru last year for $2000 with a leaking head gasket. There were no codes before I started. I replaced all the gaskets, the timing belt, the drive belts, got the heads resurfaced and cams checked at a shop and now it is all put back together and it won’t start! It turns over and will stay running if I apply some gas, but it’s running like shit, vibrating excessively and won’t stay at an idle. There are 2 codes that popped up:

P0014: Exhaust camshaft position timing -over- advanced (bank 1).

P0198: Engine oil temperature sensor circuit high input.

I didn’t run the engine much at all, I was afraid of breaking something. Any advise on where to go from here? What tests can I do to determine the cause? I’m so invested in this car and I feel like a loser. :(

I checked the timing multiple times before putting the engine back, the timing is dialed. I checked the timing again, it’s still good. I cleaned the crankshaft position sensor and tried to start it up. It ran smooth for about 10 seconds, then I put a little gas and it shut back off again. I replaced the sensor and now it won’t start again.
