It’s unlikely to get to this point, but there is a major flaw in the NBA’s In Season Tournament tie-breaker rules.
The 1st tie-breaker is h2h games, the 2nd is point differential, the 3rd is total points, but the 4th?
Regular Season Record LAST SEASON
It’s inexplicable to me why they wouldn’t have just made it current regular season winning percentage at the time all teams finished group play. Obviously, the likelihood it gets to that point is pretty slim. The 2nd and 3rd tie-breakers will settle 99.99% of ties. But I just don’t understand the thinking on the NBA’s part with this one. Here’s the official tie-breaker language from NBA.com:
In the event two or more teams are tied within a group, the tie among the teams will be broken according to the following tiebreakers (in sequential order):
• Head-to-head record in the Group Stage; • Point differential in the Group Stage; • Total points scored in the Group Stage; • Regular season record from the 2022-23 NBA regular season • Random drawing (in the unlikely scenario that two or more teams are still tied following the previous tiebreakers).
This has major “the 7th in line for the presidency is the ATTORNEY GENERAL” vibes
You’ll never see it happen, they just need something in place
