Instead of nickel defense with 5 dbs, 2 ILBs, and 4 rushers -
You may have base with 5 rushers, 2ILBs, and 4 DBs -
If the bolts are caught in that defense, and the opposition goes 4 wideouts and a RB:
-The OLB is asked to cover the slot
-Atleast 2 corners on the outside
-A 3rd Cb/Saftey for the opposite slot
-an ILB to take the RB
Depending on how you play your safteys this can be a zone defense, man, or mixed concept.
Though there are more variances to this.
Like if your worried about getting gashed from the run in that position and you want those two ILBS to stay…Now your asking possibly both OLBS to do something in coverage, which happened quite a bit last Sunday since Staley insists on playing 2high Safteys over top all the damn time.
Drop a safety down, move an ILB to cover slot, and keep 5 at the Dline imo
