Avoiding rodents in winter

Hello! I live in NYC and I’m looking for tactics to keep mice and rats out of my hood during the winter time. They got in and nested in May and it cost a pretty penny to fix so I’m open to all suggestions. Thank you in advance!!

Impossible, they need a warm engine to sleep. just open the hood twice a week and inspect it carefully
