This post is for my fiancé who just got a work from home setup. I’ll be as quick and detailed as possible. Essentially her at-work setup seems much more simple than her at-home setup despite being very similar. I might be missing something.

Currently in the office, she brings her work laptop in and connects it to her monitor (Lenovo Thinkvision P24h-20) which has a built in docking station on the back that all of her necessary peripherals plug into it. When she connects her laptop she connects a usb c (that runs from the built in docking station on the back of the monitor) to her laptop (also usb c). She makes this one connection and all her peripherals work, her display is automatically outputs to her monitor(s), and her laptop charges.

At home she just received the Thinkvision T24i-30. It’s a similar monitor but not the exact same. We ran all her peripherals to the built in docking station on the back of the monitor. However, the following three connections are necessary to get her all situated:

  1. HDMI x HDMI must be run from monitor to laptop to get display working.
  2. USB-B x USB-C must be ran from monitor to laptop to get her peripherals working.
  3. Laptop charging cord that comes with laptop is plugged in separately to a wall outlet and ran to her laptop to charge it (otherwise it won’t charge).

She sent me a picture of the USB-c x USB-c connection she uses at work but I’m having issues getting imgur to work. This is the link in case it does work:

If the link is not working, then the image is of a monitor with the number 5 to the right of it. Connected to the number 5 and extending right is the USB connection symbol (three branches).

I’ve never seen this port symbol before. I’m guessing the 5 means SS5 USB Connection? But why is there a picture of a monitor on it too? Why does she need to make 3 connections here at home opposed the one USB c connection in the office? Does this all come down to that specific type of port? Is it critical that I run a 3.1 gen 1 USB C cord from the monitor to laptop? Not sure we were using a 3.1 gen 1 cord and that’s what she uses in her office…

I’m honestly at a loss. Any advice or input you folks could provide would be much appreciated. I’m happy to provide any additional information that may be helpful. Thank you ahead of time to anyone who can provide any insight.
