Yes, everybody knows that Ben Johnson is arguably the hottest head coach prospect in the coming off-season.
But I’ve seen some posts about the Lions window already closing, and Ben Johnson leaving would be the end of it. And I just don’t buy that.
Dan Campbell hired Ben Johnson, and the two of them collaborated on putting the offensive scheme together. Who’s to say Dan Campbell doesn’t already have someone lined up next to Ben, ready to take his place? And if he doesn’t already, do you believe Dan Campbell won’t be able to find a good OC to replace Ben Johnson?
Yes, he was the one who hired Anthony Lynn first. But he got rid of him when things weren’t working. And the rest is history.
Let this season play out. I know for some of us, it’s Super Bowl or bust THIS YEAR, and I get it. But if that doesn’t happen, it’s not the end of the Brand New Lions, even if Ben Johnson does move on.
I trust Dan Campbell to find a good replacement if it happens.
I’m not going to think about it until the off-season.
I don’t care about it just living in the now
Cant enjoy it worrying about what might happen
You think this post will stop the doomer fans?! They get scared about everything. I can already see the “We can’t underestimate Justin Fields” posts.
Anybody dooming over ben johnson will doom over the next guy
Ben easily could have left last year. Said then he doesn’t really desire the head coaching gig. Got what presumably was a fat raise. I am not so certain he doesn’t want to stay for a while. No reason not to believe him, when he said he doesn’t really want to be a head coach
Ben Johnson hates orphans and burns old ladies pension checks. He HATES California and has warrants in three states. This has been a public service announcement. Avoid the Matt Patricia acolyte at all costs. You have been warned.
Can he identify as a minority so we get a third rounder?
Not serious.
But serious.
Keep the o line intact, keep improving defense and we’ll be fine. Nobody in the division looks like a threat for the next 4 years
Agreed. Johnson and Campbell were both TEs so similar skillsets, or at least base. I think there’s a chance more of this offense is attributable to DC than is commonly done.
Also…window closing? It literally just opened. Why didn’t we trade? Because we don’t need to. This team is still a work in progress and so very young. I see three ways to improve a team: acquisition, scheme and GROWTH. Young players grow.
Appreciate having a winning team folks. Let the professionals work.
Do you guys ever wonder why we have 47 assistant coaches with significant playing or coaching experience? They are easy to train. Ben Johnson’s system will not leave when he does.
Ben Johnson doesn’t have to leave. Just pay Johnson like a head coach. Make him happy and tough for him to leave. How many times do we see the hot coordinator get a head coaching job and the team is bad and fired after 1-2 years? Then they lose all their reputation. Josh McDaniels already this year, Brian Daball, with the NYG, Staley with the Chargers and countless others.
Plus only a matter of time before Jerry Jones comes calling for Dan Campbell and empties the vault to have him come back to Dallas and be the Cowboys head coach.
I think maybe it’s the reason why we are saving money instead of going for guys like chase young. They are going to pay someone big money to keep our offense alive
I don’t know if that’s how they set their budgets up, but it’s a thought
I honestly believe that if Ben leaves he has left his mark on Dan enough that he would call the plays.
Dan is smart enough to call the game. The renaissance of our offense was partly Dan and Ben calling plays together.
HC is far more valuable than OC. A good OC rocks, but it stretches your ceiling more than your floor, HC sets the floor and MCDC set that floor pretty high
