I’ve been thinking of trying the story missions, thoughts on quality aside, do people still play it or is it a dead mode? If I want to play with my friends do they need to own it too?

You always play it alone after waiting for 2 minutes meaninglessely. It’s a miracle if you meet a person once out of 10 games. It’s more like a movie in 1st POV rather than a game. For me, it’s less replayable than old archives missions: Uprising, Retribution, etc. And your friends need to own it too if you want to play with them.
