Eagles’ fan here. Man, at least we finally get an interesting prime time game, instead of this Jets-Raiders nonsense and stuff we’ve dealt with lately!
This is going to be fun game. I find when you get to elite teams, matchups become incredibly important. SF is a terrible matchup for Dallas, for example, even though both are good teams. I’d love to see the Birds win, but when I look at this matchup, I feel like it’s a bad matchup for the Birds.
My biggest concern is that our biggest flaws on defense line up nicely with your strengths:
- We struggle if the pass rush can’t get home, and Mahomes is very difficult to sack.
- We struggle across the middle, and you guys have one of the best middle-of-the-field threats in the game.
- We don’t blitz much, but if we aren’t getting pressure and need to blitz, Mahomes is deadly against the blitz.
In many ways, these strengths of KC align very closely with Dak Prescott, who has CeeDee Lamb across the middle and shares some of the elusiveness and skill against the blitz that Mahomes has. And Dak more or less carved us up last week. It does feel like a game where a key turnover could swing it, and the Eagles have not been great at generating turnovers, and they are turning the ball over more frequently.
It certainly seems like your D is playing better this year than last. Our O has statistically been good this year, but to Eagles’ fans, it always feels a bit . . . spluttery. Moreso than last year. I think the Eagles’ chances go up if they can get more pressure on Mahomes than they did in the Super Bowl, and if they can come up with some way to limit Kelce in the passing game.
I won’t be shocked if the Eagles pull one out, because the one thing that the Eagles are extremely good at is winning ugly. But if I’m picking on the Thursday before the game, I’m thinking Chiefs 31, Eagles 26.
Good luck, and may there be no injuries and reasonable reffing!
