I like Toumani but keep wondering why he gets more run than Thybulle, who’s by far our best defender and shooting better than 38% from three since coming to Portland. Don’t they want to showcase him at least for a potential trade, if not because he’s the best option at small forward?
Not totally certain as to why Chauncey chooses Toumani over Matisse, but they are very different types of players.
Toumani is more of an on ball defender, where Matisse is an excellent disruptive off ball defender.
So far Toumani’s scoring has been pretty bad, but it looks like he has potential with his jumper and slashes.
Matisse has been shooting really well and thrives as a secondary defender, but can get beat by quicker players off the dribble. I think not having a true paint defender to funnel those guys to hurts Matisse a bit and make Toumani a bit more valuable.
It’s all a work in progress though, I’ve enjoyed either one on the floor. If Toumani can settle into his jumper, there maybe times they’re both floor causing havoc on the perimeter.
