Which jersey numbers are scared in your mind? Numbers that the player wearing it must reach a level of performance to deserve it? There are so many that are obvious. To me the numbers 54 and 94 are two of those numbers. I grew up watching Randy White. I wore that number in school. I had great hopes for Bruce Carter, and still have hope for Williams. Jalen Smith was another. Flashed that expected brilliance for a year or so, then fell flat.
What can I say about 94 other than Haley and Ware? How do you live up to them? Again, had great hopes for Gregory. All the abilities are there…
Now, I am all for Parsons wearing 11, but damn I wish he would have picked one of these numbers to carry on excellence. Yeah, I am a tad old school regarding numbers, but that’s just me.
Can we appreciate for a moment that our last few 88’s have all turned out to be pretty good?
That’s gotta be the best number in Cowboys history.
None are sacred. There are too few numbers to limiting what could be used.
8 12 22 74 - To be given to no one else
33 - I think in the above category… but I think there may have been one or two since TD, but I can’t remember any RB getting it. (But… TD was well before my time so I doubt my own accuracy.)
88 94 - To be given only to a likely generational receiver or edge respectively
70 - When Zack Martin hangs it up, he and Rayfield Wright will have worn this number, so could be a candidate to bump to the same status as 88 and 94.
54 - Should be like 88 94 status with Chuck Howley and Randy White in it… but man have there been a number of misfires recently - Booby Carpenter, Bruce Smith, and of course Jaylon Smith. Hopefully Sam Williams lives up to it.
