2006 sienna. 150k miles. Check engine light came in yesterday. I took it to the dealer to find out that the catalytic converter needs to be replaced.

I can’t sell it like this and they were telling me 2.8k to replace it. The car still runs

I took it to the dealer because the mechanic who works there was my teammate growing up so we are close. He said to bring it in and I did. Toyota said 2.6k and he said he could do it outside of Toyota on his own for 1.6k but I’m just not sure what to do now

OP if your close with the tech. Ask him how many hours he’s going to charge for the Job. Try to see if he could help you out.

$1.6k to help you outside?! So he’s pretty much doing it for free. Hes just asking you to pay for the parts.

Yup. He just told me to buy the part. He and I are really close. I’ll most likely give him money for his hours. But he told me I can’t buy the part used it would have to be new

That’s great. Give him your VIN and see if he could buy the part in the Parts department using his employee discount
