In my spare time I’m a videographer and I work with 10-bit footage meaning the file sizes are pretty big. For example in a recent 5 day trip I racked up 1TB. My work flow is to record simultaneously to 2 SD cards on my Sony A7IV and I then back these up to x2 SanDisk Extreme Portable SSDs via my MacBook. It was only recently that I bought these SanDisk SSDs so I’m pretty concerned by the recent news and very nearly bought more on sale in a Black Friday deal.

Read/write speeds are quite important as if I’m backing up files while travelling it can take a while. With SanDisk it’s taking around 8hours to backup 1TB. I’m totally fine with that though, I just don’t want it to be any slower.

If you were to switch to another portable SSD, which would it be? I was attracted to the SanDisk because it comes in a neat little package and they physically seem quite like and tough, although I’m doubting their internals now. My preference is USB-C since pretty much all my devices are now that and I’d prefer not to have to think about taking additional cable with me.

You all seem pretty knowledgable here so would appreciate your advice.

What is “OWC (Envoy, FX)”? Is that a hard drive or a case? I looked up the website but it seems rather expensive being more than double the cost of SandDisk. I appreciate that I might need to pay more for better quality but I was hoping to find a similar equivalent but alternative to the SanDisk without the widespread issues.

Thunderbolt enclosure since i work on video and photography. I need the bandwidth.

Had zero issues with OWC overall and I’ve used many of their products for production, travel, and capture.
