I just joined a realm and it seems that everyone else is pretty far already, what are the best things for me to do to get ahead of everyone else?

Make a sheep farm so you can use beds to get netherite. And villagers. If you can get some good librarians you should be good.
get diamonds, set up villager breeder and trading system. i like using stick trades, seems to be the quickest imo. get max diamond gear in 2/3 hours tops
