Currently I’m in the process of building a homelab and I’m going as cheap as possible for the time being. I’ve decided to re use some PC parts I’ve had lying around which includes four 1tb Dell SAS drives. Gonna end up setting those up in RAID5, but I know that I’ll have to upgrade in the future.

I have lots of experience with computer hardware/software but when it comes to RAID, all I know are the basics of how it works; Never done it myself. When I inevitably do replace the drives to multiple 4/8/12TB drives in a new RAID array, whats the best practice for transferring over the data from the old RAID to the new one?

EDIT: this issue is brought up by the fact that I was planning on using consumer PC parts that wouldn’t have had enough ports to accommodate all drives at the same time for easy transfer. I’ve now changed my approach and plan on returning the parts I purchased and buying a used supermicro server with many many more places to install drives. I appreciate all of the help, it made me think more critically about how I want to approach my homelab.
