Wemby has drawn comparisons to KD as a lanky 7 footer with guard skills and touch, with VW himself saying he modeled parts of his game off of Durant.
We also see that many detractors have been quick to say Wemby isn’t living up to expectations and that Holgrem, or even Bol, have as much potential as he does. Even though we’re less than a quarter of a way through his rookie season.
So for some perspective, let’s look at Durant’s first games back in 2007.
KD: 18.5p on 37.2%/28.1%/83.6% splits. The Sonics had a 2-11 record.
VW: 19.3p on 42.9%/28.4%/77.8% splits. The Spurs have a 3-10 record.
So the guy who is probably the most similar to Wembanyama in terms of playstyle and team situation had very similar output in his first 13 games.
Trying to extrapolate a player’s entire career from less than 15 games is asinine. It took Durant a couple years to really become the Durant we know today. He wasn’t an All Star until his third year. So do not fret Spurs fans, don’t let the Thunder fans’ cope rile you.
I know the hype for VW is unreal, but he’s actually playing like most 19 year top picks play. Let’s give it a couple years before we start embroiling ourselves with Reddit arguments.
