A very good signing, the most significant we have made since DeMarcus Ware.

This is still the weak roster that had been run into the ground by year after year of missed draft picks, bad FA signings and post the Russ trade, not having draft picks. In terms of strength of roster we’re probably around 25th or lower in the NFL. But for the first time in 8 years we appear to have some competitive edge to us and Payton is dragging us to dirty wins.

I see the Payton and Paton experiment as a long haul and a rebuild will take a while, we aren’t going to be tanking and trading assets like PS2 to rip it up. It will take about 3 or 4 years of careful drafting and judicious FA decisions to get the roster to a top 10-15 roster in the NFL. There won’t be a huge amount of cap to play with given we’re paying Russ and we will soon be paying PS2 likely a record deal for a DB.

But I can see Payton as a coach that will make the Broncos a tough proposition, like Mike Tomlin always has the Steelers fiesty even when they don’t have the best roster. And if we can build that roster up we can be a team that competes for the Super Bowl with Payton. We were never going to compete for a SB with Vance, Fangio or Hackett.

I was pumped for you guys when you got him, and excited for SP for landing with a franchise that actually does want to win. He does need some time to sort out the roster. If his Nola time is any indication his first real draft will be incredible, although I’m not sure when you guys will actually have a full draft. The draft after next?
