I work from home and frequently work in coffee shops and hotels on guest WiFi. My home network consists of a 12-port POE switch, 4 enterprise class wireless access points, and cloud management. I have a company issued MacBook Pro for business that I don’t change security settings on.
Also have a iPad Pro and an iPhone that I use for personal use. I have been using NordVPN’s VPN on my iPad and iPhone and they are currently offering a dedicated IP address. What are the advantages/disadvantages of using a dedicated IP address?
I have also noticed that NordVPN is having trouble staying connected to my iPad and iPhone, so I am considering leaving NordVPN altogether and going with something like CloudFlare.
What products do you use to secure your personal devices? What would you say are your must-haves when it comes to security for personal devices that you use for things like banking on unsecured networks? If you use a service like CloudFlare, which of their products do you use?
A dedicated IP address is a great way to permanently connect your internet browsing activity to yourself. It works better for tracking you across the internet than cookies do in some cases. This is a boon to advertisers and law enforcement.
Why you should want one idk. Seems dumb af for a privacy company to offer you this. Then again people misunderstand how VPNs work - they keep you safe from using public wifi, and that’s about it.
A permanent Wireguard VPN connection as soon as the device leaves the home network back to your home network? That’s pretty secure, but you still have a device that can be stolen and accessed in other ways. For public Wi-Fi or 4G/5G you should always use VPN just to be safe 😊. Being your own VPN provider has many benefits, like being able to access any services that run at home from anywhere without opening up and inviting the whole world to your home. Read about Wireguard, or Tailscale if you like, maybe you’ll like it?
Disclaimer: All the personal devices of my family are automatically connected via VPN as soon as they leave the house. Giving them the ability to use any service I provide at home from anywhere.
I put a dell desktop on the same rack as my home gear and get into it with chrome RDP.
