This is crazy but he should enlist AI to help him write the rest of the story in his voice. That is the only way this gets done.

Then he can just create the outline he wants to use and have it write it, and he can edit it. He doesn’t even have to tell anyone.

At this point, I feel like maybe GRRM is not unlike Grady Tripp of Michael Chabon’s “Wonder Boys”.

Which reminds me of some quotes from that book…

“It’s always been hard for me to tell the difference between denial and what used to be known as hope.”

    And….

“The problem, if anything, was precisely the opposite. I had too much to write:

too many fine and miserable buildings to construct and streets to name and clock towers to set chiming,

too many characters to raise up from the dirt like flowers whose petals I peeled down to the intricate frail organs within,

too many terrible genetic and fiduciary secrets to dig up and bury and dig up again,

    too many divorces to grant,

    heirs to disinherit,

    trysts to arrange,

letters to misdirect into evil hands,

innocent children to slay with rheumatic fever,

women to leave unfulfilled and hopeless,

men to drive to adultery and theft,

fires to ignite at the hearts of ancient houses.”

Honestly I think the series would have been finished now if he wrote it in serialized monthly chapters in a magazine. A lot of his struggles seem to come from telling a story within the confines of the physical limitations/story requirements of a novel.

I’ve been over it for years. I still love the universe so i’m hoping we still get F&B 2 sometime soon. I have no hope for the conclusions of aSoIaF or Dunk & Egg.

I’m also hoping he can do something like Togashi. Just give us the outline of a “possible”, scrapped book ending just in case you can’t finish. I’d take it over the show any day.

As someone who only started reading A Game Of Thrones recently, this thread is a freaking landmine.

At this point we can only hope that at some point his estate commissions a or some renowned fantasy authors to finish out the series. Sanderson comes to mind as someone who could potentially finish it out but I’m not sure anyone would even want to.
