I have been using the Windows installation via USB format feature on multiple SSDs over the years, and I suspect that the formatting process may have contributed to their wear over time. While I need the ability to reset my Windows installation quickly when necessary, I also want to preserve the lifespan of my SSDs. I don’t prioritize making the data unrecoverable; I simply require a fast reset option in case I encounter an issue that takes a significant amount of time to resolve through online solutions, and formatting proves to be a quicker alternative. All my data is stored in the cloud, eliminating the need for backups.

I am aware that SSDs have a secure erase feature, but given that my Windows is installed within my SSD, I am sceptical about being able to use that feature from within Windows. How can I achieve a fast reset as efficiently as possible? I know Windows has a ‘Reset Windows’ feature that utilizes secure erase, but it is considerably slower compared to a USB drive reinstallation of Windows (which I suspect might contribute to reducing my SSD lifespan over time).

I understand that SSDs differ from traditional hard drives in their data retention mechanisms and that they don’t hold on to old data as much as spinning magnetized disks do. However, frequent formatting, if done incorrectly on an SSD, can be damaging. If anyone can provide me with answers, general advice, or information, or point me to some resources, it would be much appreciated. While I have a background in programming, I’m not an expert on this topic.
