The question is. How different is it to live in HK as an expat vs traveling there for a few months?

My partner was looking for opportunities with her company in Asia. At the same time, we’ve had a couple of sabbaticals (pré and post pandemic) which helped her decide for early retirement (I started in 2019).

She presented her resignation two months in advance. We bought a camper van and were ready to start a months long trip to us, Mexico and maybe further south. We have many more plans for travel including China and HK. I’ve been there but she hasn’t, she has been studying Mandarin and is interested in Cantonese.

Within a couple of days, a manager in HK reached out for a position there. They’ve been talking and seems like she would be the perfect fit for a new team they are building.

Now it’s decision time. Early retirement and travel or expat in HK for a couple of years, then early retirement and travel :)

For my part, if she takes the position I’d be traveling through Asia but based in HK. So, I’d be happy either way.

I know what my choice would be because when I stoped working in 2019 I also had a very strong lead in HK but I decided not to pursue it and go on a long sabbatical before calling it retirement.

She is going back and forth.
