Eagles fan checking in here. The way the Chiefs played last night would’ve given me Vietnam flashbacks if I wasn’t rooting for the other team. Many of you might already know where I’m going with this, but if not, let me explain…
When Andy Reid coached our team, we had a era where we made three straight NFC Championship Games with a star QB in Donovan McNabb but nobodies at receiver. We had guys named James Thrash (hard worker but never had the skills to be elite), Todd Pinkston (skinny and lanky and got pushed around physically by DBs), and Freddie Mitchell (loudmouth bust) at our WR positions.
It was obvious that our receivers were an issue. During the 2002 NFCCG against Tampa Bay, their corners just played bump-and-run against our WRs all game, throwing off the route timings. Against Carolina the next season, a rookie CB (Ricky Manning) said during the week that our receivers didn’t impress him…then walked the walk by picking off McNabb three times.
Meanwhile, during that run, our defense was coordinated by the late great Jim Johnson, and in many games, it was our defense that kept us alive. During our first trip to the NFCCG in 2001, our defense never surrendered more than 21 points a game until we ran into the Greatest Show on Turf Rams in that game.
What I see from the Chiefs now is a similar script: stud QB, less-than-stellar WR corps, and a Jim-Johnson-style defense coordinated by his direct disciple. For your sake, I hope Andy hasn’t reverted to his old ways, seeing as how WRs now are more valued than two decades ago. I know it’s of little solace at this moment, but at least you already won a few Super Bowls; for us, it was year after year of frustration in seeing this formula fail to get over the hump.
