Has anyone here read Khaled Husseini’s ‘And the Mountains Echoed’ ? I started reading it a long time back, and maybe it’s because I haven’t had proper time for it, but I just can’t get myself to like it.

I’ve read ‘Kite Runner’ before, and it was a pretty good book, where the story moved in a relaxed way. I expected the writing to be similar, and although Husseini uses similar ways to invoke emotion, something about the book makes it hard to like and get ‘addicted’ to. I’m more than halfway through, but this book just seems so dramatic, despite having a pretty good plot.

If someone wants to read it, I’d honestly suggest not having very high expectations. Just think of it as a simple book, and get through it.

I’m have ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ on my book list, I’ve been recommended it a hundred times, so I’m looking forward to reading it some day. I do think the characters in ‘And the Mountains Echoed’ are good, but the storyline seems to drag on I guess. Plus, this seems more drama and less emotion.

Honestly, I do get what you mean by the first books being stronger. I’ve read ‘Kite Runner’, and it was a really impactful book. It stayed with me for a long time. Compared to that, this seems much more average. Let’s see how it goes, but for now, the book isn’t really ‘drawing me in’ like the other did.

Why do you think this will seem better after reading ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ though? Won’t I feel less attracted to a book that can’t keep up with that standard?
