Which POE devices should not be plugged into home POE switches?
How can this be recognized?
IP cameras have PoE 802.3af
MikroTik routers have 802.3af/at
Home switches have 802.3af/at
Ubiquiti antennas have 48V 802.3AF
Televisions do not have POE
Despite this, I still hear that some devices are not compatible with a specific POE, citing too high voltage, and should not be used with home POE switches. Is there such a thing at all? Could something be damaged in this way?
worst case scenario the device won’t work. example: some Axis cameras are “PoE++” and need special switches to power them. if you plug normal PoE devices into such switches however, they will be fine as the switch knows only to send regular low-calorie PoE to those devices.
PoE is all 48v and the only difference is the available power which is switch-dependent.
the data protocol negotiates the power requirement - it’s not like plugging a 110v device into a 220v outlet.
