This is my current setup:

  • 1gb/1gb symmetric fttp connection
  • Mikrotik hAP AC3 w/ ether4 as WAN port.
  • PoE injector plugged into ether1
  • hAP ports connected to 4 ethernet cables that into the wall to various locations in the condo.

I am thinking about duplicating this setup for a neighboring condo. It needs to be PoE powered because the junction point has no outlets. It also needs to support PoE from a different port than the WAN because we don’t have the ability to put an injector out in front of the WAN port.

The hAP AC3 (and various other other Mikrotik options) are perfect for this because they are affordable and allow assigning WAN to a different port than the PoE input port.

The only issue with the Mikrotik devices is that I am a little wary of handing that configuration off to a neighbor and expecting them to manage it themselves… I don’t want to become their tech support anymore than absolutely necessary.

Any thoughts on alternatives that might be more user friendly but still budget friendly? Or is that a unicorn spot that only a mikrotik could fill.

(Located in USA if that matters)
