hi, I’m new here on this sub, just joined.
I’ve been doing keto and if almost 2 years now behind trying to treat some major health issues including autoimmune, obesity, hormonal, etc, etc. You get the gidst.
I’ve been baby stepping almost 3 years now changes and have gone from 5% healthy and spending easy 90% of my time bedridden in constant pain to easy 80% healthy and very active and dealing with minimal pain and issues which I am actively seeking help from my go and a gastro to help me fix. I’m not longer obese but actually aside from stretched skin and cellulite after losing more than half my body weight in excess fat, at I’d say optimum weight for my height and build, or dark close.
That said, over the past couple of weeks if I stick with my carb limit with keto even if I up cals to maintenance or above I’m dealing with signs I recognize as a blood sugar drop. Nausea, headaches, some dizziness, and overall not feeling great.
If i eat extra fat or protein its not helping much if at all, but if I intake carbs, any carbs weather a bit of steamed sweet potato or a single serve junk food snack angel food cake or sweet as a desert/ treat the symptoms go away. Not only that but my appetite isn’t as bad the next day, I actually am not hungry for like 2-3 hours before I end my fast, in fact doing a 18-20+ hour fast only has me a bit hungry like normal level I need to eat hungry not I’m so hungry I want to eat everything in sight in the next 5 minutes. I’m more of a eat when I’m hungry, don’t eat if I’m not person at this point as much as I am able. It gets complicated when you spend significant amounts of time doing across town bus trips sometimes for 6-8 hours straight. I may pack food, but I’m not always having the time to stop and pull out a couple meat snack sticks, cheese sticks, or boiled eggs to eat.
Its not a daily thing, but I’m smart enough to know I’m showing signs I may need to not do keto full time and do carb cycling. I kinda have a minor idea of what paleo is, but not really understand it. I do know its often able to be higher carb than keto so its a good option for carb cycling with keto as a way to stay low carb and still eat a way thats been working but increase my carbs some of the time if I go back and forth between keto and paleo.
But thats really most of what I do know. I’d like if I can get some kind of better idea/understanding of paleo. What are the basic limitations, what kind of carb limits or lack of are there? For example with keto most stick to a 20 g carb limit but depending on the individual that could be net or total, and for some thats too low so a 25, 30, or even 50 g carb limit is done by those who have really bad negative reactions yo anything lower beyond things like keto flu, like debilitating.
I know standard diet people are easy doing 300 g carbs a day by comparison. I know paleo and keto are not mutually exclusive and one can be doing both at once, but there are also those doing higher carbs than classifies as ketogenic but still falls under paleo/low carb. I also know some foods like sweet potato are mostly avoided with keto and are generally seen as non keto but are very much part of paleo. Those amd a few other “non kayo” foods I’ve been re adding because I don’t have a negative response to them in moderation. But I’ve still kept the carb limit with keto while doing so.
Basically, I’m trying to learn so I can adapt to my current needs without backtracking all my hard work and effort. Od like info and some tips/help.
And on that, I’m not a super strict clean keto person. I do mostly stick with whole foods bit also do some processed that I am selective about as staples and not as much for the occasional treat. I mostly do not buy “keto” products, but once again have a few that to cut the mustard. I can’t afford organic this, grass fed grass finished that. But I’m very selective about what I eat within my budget or that is processed. I just don’t stick in a box and tend to be more versatile and adaptable in what I eat so I can keep it sustainable.
I’m of the mindset of if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, but conversely if it is broke, fix it. And to me, a problem food is just that, a food that causes a negative reaction so you don’t eat it because its a problem.
I will eat occasional vegetarian and vegan meals. I will eat some meals heavier in plants than others. I also will eat some full carnivore meals. I basically eat what I like and am in the mood for, but do it as healthily as I can.
This post is me seeking help to adapt and bike on what I have already been doing and learn in order to do so. So yeah, anything from super strict options and opinions to those doing the more dirty or lax versions I’d like to hear it all because I flux between super clean strict on keto and a mix of dirty/lazy Neto, vegan/vegetarian and a more carnivore or omnivore based on what I’m in the mood for. So learning about the variation as well as limits is what I’m trying to get a feel for here.
