Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait for the version of Wemby with a reliable 3 point shot, but its not there yet. I’ve watched every game of his since the lottery and every time, he looks like a guy with a sub 30% 3pt rate. There are a few times where he strings some together and he looks unstoppable, but a lot like last night where he is just chucking up bricks. Now I don’t have any analytics, just eyeballing it, but it seems like whenever he gets the ball from Timmy bank/Dirk Leg elbow distance, it’s money. I think at least, he should not be allowed to take anymore dribble up 3s. Focus on initiating from mid range and if he get’s a wide open 3 from swinging the ball around, go for it.
We had someone bitching that Pop was too conservative with Wemby the other day. Now we get this thread.
Two sides, same level of casual.
I’ve been watching these Spurs teams since Cadillac Anderson. I ain’t “casual”.
His shot selection isn’t great. Rather than give him the red light, I’m guessing Pops gonna let him figure it out. He hopefully has the maturity and BBIQ to learn 5+ pull up 3s a game isn’t the best idea
I agree that his shot profile should he more midrange and less 3s. But i guess it’s too tempting to shoot 3s when he and everyone knows almost no one will try to contest his shot at its apex. So it’s really just a matter of improving his shooting touch from deep so might as well let him shoot 3s he looks comfortable taking

Pop is taking the Manu approach. Let Wemby be Wemby. You take the good with the bad.
I think it’s part of Wemby’s learning curve as he adjusts to the NBA and to the Spurs. The main thing is that Wemby sometimes takes absurdly difficult shots that are not even possible for most other players lol. But he doesn’t perform super well on those shots.
He’s going to need to learn that he doesn’t need to take those shots on the Spurs. They should nearly always be able to get a better shot by running the offense. Save those shots for situations where you need to bail out the team at the end of the shotclock, or other similarly desperate circumstances.
But I think Pop will give Wemby some leeway before he were to give him the “red light” on those shots per se. Give Wemby some time to see how he adjusts, and if he’s still taking those shots in 10 games time when he doesn’t need to, maybe you can have a conversation then.
