I’ll be honest, I didn’t even know who Matt Eberflus was before the Bears hired him. I then saw the notification and didn’t really know what to think, but seeing that we hired a defensive minded guy for (at the time) a QB going into his second season had me confused.

I thought maybe it would work because anything was better than Nagy (at that point lol), but here we are today. I think a lot of fans didn’t like the hire at first and still don’t like it obviously.

Who did the Bears pass up on/who is someone they could’ve had if they didn’t hire Eberflus?

He had a different last name than the other guy. And a slightly above average defense in Indy. Otherwise didn’t know shit about him or Poles, for that matter

Resounding “meh” is my recollection, with some relief that it wasn’t Quinn or Caldwell. I think people were more open to a defensive coach/older guy because they were so disgusted by Nagy, but there were definitely people who wanted Daboll or Bienemy.

I hated it. I felt we had one thing coming off the Nagy years - build an offense and develop/evaluate Fields. Our defense was OK enough.

Instead we had a firesale and didn’t invest in offense at all. Which is why I’m fine letting Poles go. He didn’t look at what he had, only what he wanted to do.

It was a meh hire. I personally hated it but it seemed like the Pace/Fox pairing (although Fox was far more accomplished).

I’m not really sure why people were happy it was him versus Caldwell or Quinn. Both have had more success than Eberflus and I would’ve trusted Caldwell far more with Fields.

I am a minor Colts fan, and I was unimpressed – especially since his defense couldn’t stop the Urban Meyer Jaguars from knocking the Colts out of the playoffs the previous year.

I disliked it but like everyone else starting a job I thought he deserved a chance

I recall seeing his name and thinking to myself, “that’s not the kind of name you hear uttered by announcers during the Super Bowl.”

Indiana was struggling even with a great o line and Flus was a relative unknown in average fan world. Didn’t expect much other than a steward while the ship is rebuilt. Sorry Flus, not personal.

Me personally most defensive guys usually field a physical team I was expecting that at the very least.

Most defensive guys field disciplined teams, I was also expecting that.

The Luke Getsy hire is the one that bothered me. Forget the division stuff, me personally I couldn’t hire an offensive guy who worked with a top tier QB after he was established not before. I need the guy who makes the Baker Mayfields and the Geno Smiths look better than they are.
