I come from the time ok Klipsch Image S4’s, Monster Turbines, Denon headphones… I think the Philips Fidelios were in there… I don’t remember the others…
But none of those are made anymore. What are the current offerings? Also amps or DAP’s? Do Sony’s still have their Clear Bass? I remember it being amazing on an MP3 player but is pretty Meh in the app for my XM5’s
hifiman he-r10d
7-8db boost in the lower bass region. they’re the most bass centric can i’ve ever owned.
Well if you have the budget for them, Audeze LCD-2’s/2 Classic and some EQ can do some awesome sub-bass.
ZMF and Fostex are solid. Otherwise it’s IEMs
People are saying the LCD-X’s are better?
I’m fine spending $800 on the LCD-2’s because they are universally praised and they use to be like $2000.
Some the like the new Denon’s or IE900’s or the Sony MDR-X1R’s and IER’s are hard for me to swallow…
The LCD-X are better out of the box but they’re basically the same as the 2.
The LCD 2 Classic are $800. The LCD 2 are $1k.
Sony MDR
i just poke my head here and say that for 109 you can have bass head dream in form of hifiman he-r9
For basshead headphones, you can still look at open backs. There are a few that do bass pretty good (not extreme basshead levels) but they do bass well and everything else is way better than consumer bass head headphones. My main recommendation include AKG 700 series and Focal headphones. The Focal are known for having increased bass, it doesn’t show up on measurements but the bass impact is there. My AKG surprise me every time with how much bass they have, I expect them to have none, but the bass quality is amazing, and with EQ you can add a lot more bass without any distortion.
These have bass but also have detail and overall quality better than closed back headphones.
((( Skullcandy Crusher Evo )))
They would make some $$$ if they actually made a good product like Beats…
Etymotic ER4XR with EQ.
Really? I know they have a slight bass boost but didn’t seem like anything crazy
Sony IER-Z1R easily the best bass-head IEMs IMHO
$$$$$ 😭😭😭😭😭
Planar IEMs have the best textured bass, they’re deeper but less impactful, very separated. Best for music. Otherwise DD IEMs slam with EQ.
Hifiman edition xs for planar open back headphone for sound quality+bass at a somewhat budget of $500 USD.
The jvc sz2000 is known as the bassiest headphone in the world. It needs EQ to have max output. They’re discontinued but you can find one or two used on like eBay.
Thx900 headphone because closed back.
I recommend the ms1 galaxy IEM with EQ for budget ($16) bass. I use +12db at 31hz with -3 gain. I also have a truthear zero: red and it has really good sub bass but at $55 USD and there’s almost no difference between it and the ms1 but the red is quieter by 6db.
Basshead Headphones that can still be found New in box:
torque t402v
Denon AH-D7200
Beats EP
Kenwood KH-KR900
JVC HASR100XB (Elation XX)
Sony MDR-X10
Sony MDR-XB920
V-Moda LP2
Sennheiser HD25
Sony MDR XB500
Ultrasone Signature X
Sony MDR-Z1R
Skullcandy crushers. That’s arguably the most bass.
E-MU Teaks
Skullcandy Crusher xD
The only thing that headphone is doing right is the bass but everything else is just bad with this headphone.
Meze 99 Classic/Neo/Noir has a lot of bass but is very warm and sounds soulless…
Fostex TH 900 MK2 sounds really good but is of course really expensive…
Then there is maybe the E-Mu Teaks which are okay for their price if you are listening mostly to EDM and Hip Hop.
The older Denon row like AH-D2000/5000/7000 have a really strong bass but as you have already mentioned are discontinued so you would have to get like 10-12 year old headphones from classifieds.
I found the bass from the Focal Elex impressive although it’s an open back headphone and some of the ZMF headphones like the Atticus are also great.
Denons have actually come back! different model nunmbers now like 5200, 700 etc.
I know.
But the drivers are different.
The ones from the older models are from Foster/Fostex and the ones from the newer models are Denon’s own FreeEdge drivers. If you heard both you will hear the difference.
thanks - so i think you are saying that the older/original models are better. good to know. is anyone aware of a good review/discussion of the older denons of this type?
When it comes to bass alone then the older models are better because the bass impact/slam is stronger. On the technical side the newer models might be better but as always that’s also subjective.
I’m sure there are a lot of reviews if you are searching for them.
Personally I try to demo every headphone I’m interested in because a review from someone is also just a subjective opinion from someone and can be different to my own impression of a headphone.
