From what I can see, Green’s current substitution pattern is usually something along the lines of the following:

First Quarter/Third Quarter:

  1. Starts the quarter
  2. Subs out around the 6-7 minute mark.
  3. Subs in around the 2 minutes mark with all bench players and finishes the quarter.

Second/Fourth Quarter:

  1. Sits the start of the quarter
  2. Subs in around 5-6 minute mark to finish the quarter.

The logic behind this substitution pattern at the moment seems to be based around the fact that Green can sub in at 2 minutes to basically focus on scoring since he plays with the bench. Furthermore, end of quarters is usually when you need guys that can create their own shots and make tough shots to maximise the 2-for-1, so having Green finish the quarters makes sense.

However, I feel like this substitution pattern makes it harder to maintain a rhythm, because you are subbing out earlier, and subbing in with little time left before another sub out. The big difference I noticed against the Grizzlies is Udoka actually kept Green on the court at the start of the 4th quarter, and he went on to score 7 points in the first 3 minutes of the quarter (continuing his play to end the 3rd quarter)

I am sure Udoka is aware more than anyone else that Green can be very streaky, so his usual substitutional pattern is actually against his strengths. I wonder if Udoka is deliberately forcing Green to develop consistency by giving him spot minutes to end quarters.
