Source is OverTheCap. Available cap space used here is the effective cap space, meaning it is “the cap space a team will have after signing at least 51 players and its projected rookie class to its roster”. For example, if a team is scheduled to have only 40 players under contract, it automatically fills in the remaining 11 roster spots with their appropriate cap hits. I used this instead of raw cap space because it’s a better indicator of how much space each team would have for luxury spending. For that reason, I also included the number of signed players for 2024.
As you can see, we rank 13th overall in cap space. This already takes into account the increase in cap hit for our big ticket players (like Stafford’s 50 mil). Based on this, I don’t know if we’ll be as big of a player in FA as a lot of people seem to think we’ll be. Numbers like “100 mil in cap space” is being thrown around but first, that’s just not true, and second, there’s literally a dozen teams who have more space than we do. Our cap space ranking is 23rd if we look ahead to 2025, and 22nd if we look ahead to 2026, so we also have to think about rolling some space over from 2024 to increase flexibility in those later years. If we decide to re-sign some of our current players (like Witherspoon or Dotson or Jackson), then that will eat up cap space without adding new players, so that’s something to keep in mind as well.
My guess is 1 premium player and then mostly higher quality depth players, maybe 2 premium players if we can get the numbers to work out in our favor.
Why are the Saints always in such cap hell? Who the fudge are those dudes paying?
