Allegations or not, we’re talking about a potentially serious crime. Yet, none of the big media outlets are reporting on it. Do we know why? I can’t help but thinking about other NBA player allegations and it being big news on ESPN or Fox Sports etc. what is the difference? Can’t help but imagining if this was a non white player what the media would be doing here. Can anybody give any other reason as to why this may be?
Wander Franco has three complaints filed against him
Josh Giddey has a twitter account that so far has made unsubstantiated claims with no victims stepping out to accuse Giddey of abuse
Statutory rape does not always involve a victim reporting it, in fact more often then not statutory rape is never reported by the victim.
Because you’re putting the cart before the horse and being smug about it. Nobody likes that.
What? How am I putting the cart before the horse?
Usually the media cycle on these sorts of stories is:
- vague online rumours (optional)
- reporting by TMZ-type media sources that are really good at finding people who will talk, and do minimum vetting.
- reporting on those TMZ reports by mainstream media.
- mainstream media doing their own well-vetted reporting, which is usually at the stage that everyone from the player’s reps, to the league, to the victim’s reps, to prosecutors, are all willing to make statements to the press.
Right now we’re still at #1. Usually things move from 1 to 2 quickly because with a lot of allegations, either the victim wants to talk or someone close to the victim wants to talk; someone usually sees themselves as doing the right thing by getting the story out there. In this case, the alleged victim potentially doesn’t see herself as a victim here; her parents might feel that this blowing up is worse for her than it being handled quietly. There just might not be those sources that a TMZ-type outlet can lean on. In which case, if any meaningful coverage happens it may not be until step 4, which can take a lot of time.
I appreciate your thoughtful and serious response.
