If you’re into fantasy, do you ever pick up a romance and give it a shot? Or read a historical fiction book if you’re into scifi? It’s a leap of faith that doesn’t always work out but when it does it’s pretty sweet.

I asked a friend what her favorite book was, and she said The Goldfinch. I had never heard of it and hadn’t read any fiction/contemporary like it, but it ended up being such a great surprise. It was one of the few 5 star reads of that year and I never would have experienced it if I hadn’t taken the chance.

I’d say every so often, just take a chance. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Good question. No, LOL, I never read outside of my comfort zone. Although it’s ok because my comfort zone is pretty wild.

Totally. I don’t like to limit myself when it comes to genres, but there are definitely some that I pick up more than others. I’ve done the StoryGraph genre challenge the last couple years to help me with this and it’s been fantastic.

I will read any genre if the premise sounds good, and I’m willing to put down any book that doesn’t grab me.

I like a lot of different kinds of books, but I don’t go out of my zone often enough because I usually don’t like it when I do. I wonder how many great books I’ll miss out on because of my bias, but a lot of stories about “normal” people just living their “normal” lives (terms I’m using loosely) will never appeal to me no matter how beautiful or meaningful they are

Definitely don’t read romance. I find zero appeal to that genre. If you enjoy it - good on you, I have no disrespect for you choice - but it’s completely unappealing to me.

Apart from that - I’ll read anything from historical fiction to great American classic to Russian literature to fantasy to sci fi to autobiography to mystery and anything in between - and love not sitting in any one genre

I’ve been an avid reader of sci-fi and fantasy for years with the odd classic thrown in. In recent years I’ve gone all out on the classics from 100 years ago or more, due to their lack of copyright, and have loved it. I love putting myself into the era and thinking about how the world has changed since then.

I read fantasy. But if someone I know that knows me recommends a book, I’ll read it. Also, if my wife makes me read something lol.
