What’s your reasoning for having different editions of the same book/series?
Why do you choose one book/series over the other books you have?
How much are you willing to spend on editions?
I’ve recently watched a lot of tik toks of people showing their different editions of their favorite books/series and I got curious.
The series that I have the most books of is hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy (5 books). I bought the first book to see if I like it, after that I got a cheap hitchhiker’s guide that had all 5 books in one giant book. I thought " hey thats great! Now i have a book that has it all and the other one I can lend to people!". After covid i thought that when I re-read I have the problem that if I want to read book 2-5 I have to always carry the giant version and I love to read on trains so I got one of those special version with the 5 single books in a case.
And then I have 2 special versions because I just love a pretty cover!
Various translations of Gilgamesh and Homer’s Odyssey- just to see the differences. Also Tao de Ching
Remember Conspiracy Theory? Mel had boxes of Catcher ion the Rye!
I like getting copies of the same book in different languages
I have 8 copies of Dune, each of which is either of a different edition or a different printing order within a particular edition. There are several reasons why I have this many copies. First, this is obviously a book that I love. It’s probably my all-time favorite sci-fi novel. Second, I am a collector, so I try to look for different editions and printing orders of books, as some are more highly sought after, rarer, and more valuable than others. Third, it’s fun and beautiful to see how all the different covers and the book’s printing history have evolved over time. Below is a link to my 8 different copies of Dune if anyone is curious.
I mean, I do sometimes like to have print and audio versions of the same book. My spouse is only into audiobooks, so if I like a book and then want to share it, it’s off to libro.fm I go.
But multiple print editions? Nah. Not unless it’s written by a literal friend or family member of mine. I don’t have enough shelf space for that.
I don’t
